(Port) Wine of the month March 2021: Niepoort Garrafeira 1987
There is a new kid in town – acutally two! Niepoort’s breathtaking Garrafeira sequence got two new family-members: 1983 and 1987 to follow the years 1931, 1933, 1938, 1940, 1948, 1950, 1952, 1964, 1967 und 1977. There are always three years on a Garrafeira label. The year of the harvest (large), the year where the Port is filled from large casks – pipas – to demijohn glass bottles with 15 Liter content (decanted) and the year where the Port is finally put to 0,75l-bottles (bottled). This 1987 Garrafeira was tasted at the large German online tasting in March and is not the original Garrafeira 1987 blend as it originates from a separate Garrafão: Fully transparent dark-red color. Wonderful caramel-malty nose, fine and precise with nuts and tobacco. Freshly floral on the palate, much noticeable acidity which will give this Port a huge ageing potential. Malt, tobacco, honey. Long aftertaste. 18/20
